Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| UConn | +2 You know that video where Luigi wins a Mario Party mini game by doing absolutely nothing while all the other players fall off? That’s UConn this week. |
| Purdue | -1 Watching Nebraska go 4-26 from 3 against Iowa has to hurt. Almost as much as losing a second early conference game. |
| North Carolina | +3 UNC looks locked in, and they have a pretty soft schedule between now and facing Duke at Cameron on February 12th. |
| Kansas | +1 Despite the loss at UCF, because of chaos all around them, Kansas moves up with the win over Oklahoma. But you’re on thin ice, Jayhawks. |
| Houston | -3 Losses at Iowa State and TCU are far from disastrous, but this was not the welcome to the Big 12 Houston had envisioned. |
| Kentucky | -2 Kentucky fans are likely hoping that they never have to see Taylor IV and Redford ever again after they combined for 59 points at College Station. |
| Duke | +5 Duke gets revenge on Georgia Tech and should have a couple of easy games against Louisville and Pitt this week. Key word: should. |
| Baylor | +5 Hard fought home wins over BYU and Cincinnati for the Bears this week. Now they take to the road against KSU and Texas. |
| Tennessee | -2 Knecht is an incredible player, and he needed to be for the Vols to escape Georgia after losing to Mississippi State. |
| Wisconsin | +4 In a week full of upsets, the Badgers survived tough games at Ohio State and against Northwestern. Enjoy first place in the Big 10. |
| Illinois | -3 A home loss to Maryland hurts a lot. Illinois desperately needs to beat the bottom feeders of the Big 10 this week to bounce back. |
| Arizona | -3 Another road loss, this time to Washington State. Arizona needs to figure out how to play on the road if they want to make a run in March. |
| Auburn | +5 Auburn looks like a real contender in the SEC right now, especially after unexpected losses from Kentucky and Tennessee. |
| TCU | +10 TCU followed up a near-win at the Phog with back-to-back top 10 wins over Oklahoma and Houston. The Frogs are for real. |
| Creighton | +1 The Jays were lucky to escape with the win over St. John’s this week, but this week could be brutal—road games against UConn and Seton Hall. |
| Oklahoma | -5 Winning on the road is hard, especially in the ultra-deep Big 12. Just ask the Sooners, who limp home after trips to TCU and Kansas. |
| Memphis | Three consecutive close calls against Tulsa, SMU, and UTSA have shaken my confidence in the Tigers. |
| Marquette | -8 What happened to Marquette? They looked like title contenders in Hawaii, but have now lost 3 of 5. |
| Utah State | +5 Utah State was very lucky to escape UNLV with the win, thanks to a questionable 5-point play with 8 seconds left. Still, a road win in the Mountain West is hard to come by, so they’ll take it. |
| Colorado State | -5 Colorado State will be glad to return home after road losses to Utah State and Boise State. |
| Dayton | NR I admit that I’ve overlooked the Flyers to date, but they look pretty darn good right now. Can they hold off Rhode Island and Richmond in the A10? |
| San Diego State | -3 Winning at the Pit is really, really hard (I remember that well from BYU’s Mountain West days), but that was ugly. |
| BYU | -2 Losing at Baylor isn’t terrible, and BYU got their first Big 12 win at UCF (ask Kansas how tough that can be). Still, the shooting woes continue to be alarming. |
| Texas Tech | NR Texas Tech has put together a great start to their season, but a trip to Houston this week will be a chance to see if the Red Raiders can make noise in the Big 12 this year. |
| Ole Miss | NR Ole Miss bounced back from their first loss with convincing wins over Florida and Vandy. But this week includes a trip to Auburn. |
Dropped from rankings: Gonzaga (20), Nevada (22), Clemson (23) Winning on the road is hard. Just ask Purdue, Kansas, Houston, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arizona, Oklahoma, Colorado State, San Diego State, BYU, Gonzaga, or Clemson. Next 5 out: Oregon, Seton Hall, Boise State, Iowa State, and Utah.
