Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Purdue | They don't have a ranked win like Arizona, but they haven't given me a reason to doubt yet, so I am keeping Purdue at 1. |
| Arizona | We are 1 week into the season. Arizona beat Duke on the road. They have the single best resume in the nation right now. Concrete record > hype/potential |
| Kansas | Is Kansas better than Arizona? Maybe, but Arizona beat a top 5 team on the road. Kansas has to prove it still. |
| Duke | Duke lost in a respectable fashion. They didn't get blown out so I'm keeping them top 5. |
| UConn | |
| Houston | |
| Marquette | |
| Tennessee | I really don't know what to think of Tenn. yet. I thought the exhibition win over MSU was impressive, but then JMU also beat MSU, so I don't know if Tenn is good or MSU sucks. But they beat Wisconsin. |
| Gonzaga | I expect to be ranking gonzaga higher in the coming weeks as they play some quality games |
| Arkansas | Aside from the promotion everyone gets for me unranking MSU, Arkansas is averagin 39% from 3 for a 2 game avg of 28.5ppg from 3. Last year, Ark shot 21% from 3 to start the season. |
| Baylor | I don't know what to do with Baylor. The auburn win was a good quad 1 win. But then they let John Brown score 70 on them? I'm voting based on what I saw in the auburn game which was a top 15/10 team. |
| Florida Atlantic | I'll admit I may have FAU too low. But its only week 1 so there isn't much to judge for everyone. |
| Creighton | I probably have creighton too low too. I think the Big East being weak will make Creighton stay in the top 15 all season though. |
| Kentucky | This team looks to have slow starts so far, but has consistently created big separation in the second half. I like the talent Cal has over A&M. |
| Texas A&M | Aggies had an awful shooting night against Ohio State. Its not enough to move them lower just yet since they did pull out a fair quality win on the road |
| Texas | |
| Auburn | Maybe a hot take? I've liked this Auburn team this off-season. It is very clear from the Baylor game that this team has most of the pieces necessary to make some noise. Maybe some defensive weak links |
| Miami (FL) | |
| USC | They looked good against Kansas State, but Tylor Perry was just too small. The game sometimes looked like high school basketball where the bigger, faster, stronger guards just scored at will. |
| North Carolina | UNC allowed 70 points by Radford. Thin Ice here |
| Illinois | week 1 votes still include "hype" and "potential". This team beat Kansas in an exhibition. That counts for "eye test" and "potential" in my book |
| Saint Mary's | |
| Villanova | |
| Virginia | Snuck out a win against a potential tournament team Florida |
| James Madison | Started off the season with a road win over Mich. State. |
I unranked Michigan State. They lost a home season opener. I can't justify saying they are better than everyone else on the list who took care of business. Also, because week 1 includes a ton of speculation still, I am considering their exhibition loss against Tenn. as part of the "eye test." Mich. State doesn't have it together yet. They have to earn their ranking back imo. I also unranked Alabama because their box scores don't justify placement over spots 20-25 imo. They are giving up way too many points to what should be very inferior opponents.
