Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Gonzaga | Many great teams have fallen in Viejas. Ike and Nembhard slew the Aztecs, and then all hands helped out in a drubbing of LBSU. |
| Auburn | All five starters scored at least a dozen against North Alabama, led by Johni Broome's 30 and 17. The Tigers start off Maui with Iowa St. |
| Tennessee | Virginia understandably didn't look the part against Tennessee. Baylor, despite a 2OT game the prior night, was seen as a worthy foe of the Vols. Zeigler and Lanier had their way. |
| Kansas | Hunter Dickinson still looks quite good. And it'll be his experience against Cooper Flagg's youth as the headliner on Tuesday in Vegas. |
| Marquette | Kam Jones had 17/13/10 against Purdue. David Joplin had 29 on 6-11 from 3 against Georgia. Batman and Robin, in Milwaukee, of all places? |
| UConn | East Texas A&M was the last appetizer. The entrees are in Lahaina, with Penny's Memphis Tigers the opening act. |
| Duke | Cooper Flagg looked rejuvenated against UofA, and Kon Knueppel is the No. 2. We'll see if that's enough against the Jayhawks. |
| Houston | Houston's defense is still awesome, but they'll still need to score points. They didn't score enough against their first SEC foe, the Tide are next in Vegas. |
| Kentucky | No post-Duke hangovers against Lipscomb or Jackson St, and this team's depth should help against Gonzaga early December. |
| Iowa State | Three games in, and we know nothing. That will change Monday around 11:30 PM EST, after their game against Auburn goes final. |
| Cincinnati | Georgia Tech was their first power conference foe. The Bearcats have a chance to be undefeated heading into 2025, which starts with Arizona. |
| North Carolina | The forwards have to find a way to impact the game, and against the competition in Hawaii, all components will have to be working. |
| Purdue | Marquette is the real deal, and Purdue throttled Marshall in response. Let's see if the Boilermakers can keep that loss as fuel. |
| Alabama | Alabama beat Illinois, and Mark Sears didn't score a single point. I'm not sure whether Tide fans are excited or disappointed by that result. |
| Florida | Alijah Martin and Walter Clayton Jr give this team a much higher floor than most in the SEC. We'll know the ceiling after visiting UNC in mid-December. |
| Texas A&M | Creighton may not be as good as thought (especially w/o Ashworth) but if Texas A&M beats them and Oregon this week, the Aggies will have three good wins before December. |
| Ohio State | John Mobley Jr has scored 10+ every game this year, without starting any of them. Once Jake Diebler figures out his rotation, this team will be scary. |
| Mississippi State | Five Bulldogs scored in double figures against SMU, and only one started. This team is deep and talented, and my sleeper pick to win the SEC. |
| Wisconsin | Arizona, UCF, and Pittsburgh: all very good at hoops, and all victims to Greg Gard's Badgers. In particular, John Tonje looks a lot more like he was with CSU than with Mizzou. |
| Saint Mary's | Randy Bennett is one of the most underappreciated coaches in the nation, and the Gaels are doing it again. They'll upset a P5 team in the tourney, mark my words. |
| Indiana | The much-acclaimed transfer class is going swimmingly, but will the stiffer tests in the Bahamas show any flaws? |
| Memphis | Four good teams have fallen to Penny Hardaway in as many games. His team is battle-tested; Dan Hurley is battle-tested. See you in Maui Monday night. |
| Pitt | Losing to Wisconsin is hardly a crime, but the Panthers can't compound their mistakes against Ohio St and Miss. St. |
| Penn State | Ace Baldwin Jr and Zach Hicks are looking to lead the Nittany Lions to their first Sweet 16 since before 9/11. |
| Xavier | Sean Miller has two studs in Ryan Conwell and Zach Freemantle, and they play great complimentary basketball. |
Used a combination of KenPom, EvanMiya, ESPN BPI and my gut. But mostly the first three.
