Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Tennessee | The Vols take the #1 spot that I should have given them last week, although they did it by the skin of their teeth, ekeing out a 2-point win over Illinois. |
| Iowa State | Iowa State drops by no fault of their own - I felt Tennessee's wins were better - but the Cyclones continue to play extremely well. The in-state showdown with Iowa was a classic. |
| Auburn | The metrics continue to love Auburn, and they absolutely thrashed an Ohio State team that was on the brink of breaking into the top 25. The Tigers remain extremely dangerous. |
| Alabama | I wanted to put Alabama a bit higher but I decided that Auburn's 38-point shellacking of Ohio State gave them the edge. Still, the Tide could be poised to pounce if Tennessee stumbles. |
| Kentucky | Mark Pope continues to have the 10-1 Wildcats playing extremely well, coming away with a great rivalry game win over a deceptively strong Louisville team. |
| Duke | Sometimes you have to make tough decisions. I had Duke at #3 last week but I am forced to drop them because Incarnate Word is a cupcake, and the teams that leapfrogged them played stronger opponents. |
| Florida | The Gators are rolling and remain undefeated after a convincing win over Arizona State, who had a good argument for possibly being ranked last week. A neutral-ish game against a wounded UNC looms. |
| Houston | Not much to say here. Houston is about as high as they can get as a 3-loss team right now, but it's a mystery how one of the best offenses in the nation can only put up 62 against Troy. |
| Kansas | Kansas seems to have recovered from the struggles of last week, but they still have some work to do. |
| Texas A&M | Texas A&M's defense continues to be solid as they knocked off Purdue in what was effectively a road game for them. |
| Gonzaga | The Zags were on the losing end of an epic battle against UConn. Some might ask, "Will, why is Gonzaga still ahead of UConn?" Gonzaga has played a MUCH tougher schedule. |
| Oregon | No notes. Oregon won a game they should have won. |
| UConn | Okay, Dan Hurley, we get it, UConn is back. You still need to work on your defense, though, but beating the Zags with their ridiculous SOS is truly impressive. |
| Purdue | Matt Painter needs to find an answer for Purdue's inconsistencies, and they need to do it fast because they have a big showdown with Auburn this week. |
| Dayton | New to ballot. Anthony Grant wins the battle of the former VCU coaches in an absolutely impressive way, erasing a 13-point deficit and winning by 8. The Flyers are flying high...best team since 19-20? |
| San Diego State | |
| UCLA | |
| Marquette | |
| Baylor | |
| Illinois | |
| Mississippi State | |
| St. John's | |
| Memphis | New to ballot. |
| Arkansas | New to ballot. Welcome back, Coach Cal. Took you long enough. |
| Ole Miss | New to ballot. I should've had Ole Miss here last week, honestly. |
DROPPED FROM BALLOT: Clemson (13), Michigan (14), Creighton (18), Penn State (23). NEW TO BALLOT: Dayton, Memphis, Arkansas, Ole Miss. ALMOST FAMOUS: Clemson, Pittsburgh, Boise State, Oklahoma, Drake.
